First-Year Engineering Buddy (E-Buddy) Program

Are you a new first-year international U of T Engineering student? The First Year E-Buddy Program is here to support you with your transition to the Faculty and the University!

E-Buddies are upper-year engineering peer mentors who will provide support by answering questions about life at U of T Engineering, sharing their experiences, and providing information about campus resources. They will also provide informal programming and events to build community amongst international students, as well as provide support through structured workshops and events.

All first-year international* students are eligible to participate in this program.  You will receive an email invitation to join the E-Buddy Hub, which will launch on Quercus in mid-June.

We’ve also put together the Engineering International Student Guide, which is a supplementary guide designed to provide you with an overview of the supports and resources that are available to you as you navigate through your first year of studies as an international student.

The E-Buddy program is free for new U of T Engineering international students, and all workshops listed below are free for registration.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to connect with any of our E-Buddies! They can be reached at

*If you identify as an international student but are a returning Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, you are also eligible to participate in the E-Buddy program. Please reach out to the First Year Office ( for more information.

E-Buddy Bios

Ashyln Abdelmaseeh, 2T5

Hey, I'm Ashlyn and I recently completed my first year in TrackOne Engineering. I'm going to be entering my second year in Mechanical Engineering this upcoming fall. I lived in Saudi Arabia for four years before returning to Canada to finish high school, and to start studying at U of T.  Some of my hobbies and interests include travelling, crocheting, and Formula 1. I'm excited to join the First Year Office team as an E-Buddy. Don't hesitate to contact me through email!

Sofia Karter, 2T3+PEY

Hey! I’m Sofia and I’m an Engineering Science student specializing in Biomedical Systems Engineering. Currently, I’m doing my PEY Co-op studying embryonic wound healing at the RFG Lab. I am from the Dominican Republic and came to Toronto in 2019 to study at U of T. This summer, taking on the role of E-Buddy, I look forward to meeting all of our incoming first-year international students and being a support as you adapt to university life. Outside of academics, I love music, and have taken part in musical theatre, acapella groups and dance lessons! I’m excited to meet you all and get to learn what you most look forward to at U of T Engineering!

Michael Nguyen, 2T5

Hi everyone! I’m Michael, an international student from Vietnam. I arrived in Canada last August and just finished my first year in Chemical Engineering. I encountered multiple problems travelling with COVID still in place, getting used to Toronto, experiencing all hybrid, online, and in-person university, but I believe it finally turned out well. Therefore, I’m more than happy to be here and provide the support and preparation you need for a smooth transition from high school. Being an international student is challenging, especially when it comes to organizing schoolwork and managing various aspects of life. As a member of the International Student Experience (ISE) Student Advisory Committee (ISESAC), I will represent international students in voicing your opinion to the Center for International Experience (CIE), in hopes of enhancing your university experience. Apart from the general questions you may have, I am also ready to answer any inquiries about engineering/undergraduate research, which I am completing this summer. Welcome to UofT Engineering!

Jason Zhou, 2T4+PEY

Hi everyone! My name is Jason and I will be one of your E-Buddies this summer! I just finished my second year in the Engineering Science program and will be major in Robotics Engineering in September. I grew up in China and moved to Vancouver when I was in grade 9. I have been studying in Canada since then. In my spare time during winter, I like to ski a lot - skiing has always been my favorite sport. Here is a fun fact about me: I like everything that is related to orange. I like orange as a color, I like it as a fruit, and I like it as a juice! If you have any questions about university life or academic study, don't hesitate to reach out to me!
