U of T Engineering undergraduate students have access to study, research and professional experiences abroad. Below is a list of highlighted international opportunities available to undergraduate engineering students. Students are encouraged to explore the full list of international experiences through U of T Learning Abroad.

Research Opportunities Abroad

Summer Research Exchange ProgramThe Summer Research Exchange Program, offered through the Centre for International Experience, allows undergraduate students to gain hands-on research experience at partner institutions worldwide. Students are supervised by faculty at the host institution in pre-designed projects or in self-designed projects. Engineering students can apply their summer research hours toward their practical experience requirements (PER) or, in certain cases, earn an APS299 credit. Research placements run full-time for 8 to 16 weeks between May to August.Application Deadline: December 4, 2023
RISE-Globalink Research InternshipThe RISE-Globalink Research Internship (RISE-GRI) is a competitive initiative that offers undergraduate students at Canadian universities in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, earth science, and physics the opportunity to participate in a research project supervised by a doctoral student at a German university or institution.Application Deadline: December 6, 2023
Laidlaw Scholars ProgramThe Laidlaw Scholars Program provides first and second-year students with funding to pursue research in any area of interest at U of T, or anywhere in the world. The Scholarship Program provides 16 months of programming that aims to develop a new generation of leaders who are skilled researchers and believe it is a moral imperative to lead with integrity.Application Deadline: January 29, 2024
Reach AllianceThe Reach Alliance recruits student leaders across the world’s best universities to examine how critical interventions and innovations reach those who are the hardest to reach: those living in extreme poverty, the geographically remote, administratively invisible and marginalized. Take part in student-driven, faculty-mentored research and leadership initiatives by being a Reach Alliance Researcher.Applications for U of T students open on December 8, 2023.

Course Opportunities Abroad

Course ExchangeChoose from over 130 international institutions to study abroad on exchange! Exchange opportunities offered through the Centre for International Experience (CIE) provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to take core or elective courses at partner institutions abroad as non-degree students. You may go on exchange for a semester, a full academic year, or over the summer.The general deadlines for course exchange opportunities are listed below based on when the exchange would take place. Please note that each experience may have a different deadline, which will be indicated on the experiences page.

Fall 2024 and Full Year Exchange (2024-2025): January 17, 2024.

Summer Experience: February 14, 2024.

Winter 2025 Exchange: April 3, 2024.
Summer AbroadComplete a full-year Arts & Science course credit in 3 to 5 weeks overseas with Summer Abroad!

These courses are designed to be relevant to the location and enrich the academic experience by providing an exciting and educational international experience. Relatively small classes (25 on average) are taught by U of T professors or faculty from the host university. Engineering students can take these courses to complete CS/HSS credits or Arts & Science minors.
Applications open for Summer Abroad on December 15, 2023.

The deadline to apply is February 1, 2024.
