Course Marks and Grades
The following course marks and grades relate to the performance of a student in the work of a particular course. A course grade or mark should not be interpreted as an assessment of a student’s status within their program of studies as the status is determined by the promotional regulations outlined in the Academic Calendar. Have questions about your academic status? Consult your Academic Advisor.
The equivalents of the numerical scale of marks in the refined letter grade scale and the grade point value are as follows:
Numerical Scale of Mark | Letter Grade | Refined Grade Point Value |
90-100 | A+ | 4.0 |
85-89 | A | 4.0 |
80-84 | A- | 3.7 |
77-79 | B+ | 3.3 |
73-76 | B | 3.0 |
70-72 | B- | 2.7 |
67-69 | C+ | 2.3 |
63-66 | C | 2.0 |
60-62 | C- | 1.7 |
57-59 | D+ | 1.3 |
53-56 | D | 1.0 |
50-52 | D- | 0.7 |
0-49 | F | 0 |
The grade point values above apply to marks earned in individual courses. Grade point averages are weighted sums of the grade points earned (see below), and thus do not necessarily correspond exactly to the scale above.

Grade Point Average
U of T Engineering does not promote students on the basis of Grade Point Average (GPA). Students are promoted on their weighted sessional average.
GPA is the weighted sum of the grade points earned, divided by the number of courses in which grade points were earned. Aegrotat (AEG) courses are not included in the average, nor are transfer credits, courses taken elsewhere on a Letter of Permission or courses designated as “Extra.”
Three types of grade point averages are shown on a student’s official transcript:
• Sessional Grade Point Average (SGPA) is based on courses taken in a single session (Fall, Winter or Summer)
• Annual Grade Point Average (AGPA) is based on courses taken in the Fall-Winter Sessions
• Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) takes into account all courses taken for degree credit in the Faculty
The calculations for your SGPA are based upon the GPA value of each course. It is not calculated based solely on the sessional percentage average due to the fact that each course is weighted differently and has different GPA value.
An example of calculated SGPA and Sessional Weighted Average for a single Winter Session is located below.
Course | Weight (W) | % Value (P) | GPA Value (G) | G*W (T) | W*P (S) |
ANT100Y1 | 1 | 73% | 3 | 3 | 0.73 |
CIV111H1 | 0.5 | 77% | 3.7 | 1.85 | 0.385 |
CHE222H1 | 0.5 | 63% | 2 | 1 | 0.315 |
ELE333H1 | 0.5 | 90% | 4 | 2 | 0.45 |
MIE444H1 | 0.5 | 74% | 3 | 1.5 | 0.37 |
Total | 3 | 9.35 | 2.25 | ||
SGPA and SWA | 3.1 | 0.75 |
Sessional Grade Point Average: (Total of the T column) divided by (Total of the W column) or 9.35/3.00 = 3.1.
Sessional Weighted Average: (Total of the S colum) divided by (Total of the W column) or (2.25/3) = 0.75 or 75%.
