Pursuing a certificate or minor at U of T Engineering can be a flexible way to enrich your academic experience, pursue a passion area and set yourself up for future success. The benefits are innumerable and include the following:
- Enhancing your skill set and versatility
- Obtaining interdisciplinary knowledge
- Expanding your professional network
- Improving your career prospects
- Achieving personal growth
Is a minor or a certificate right for you?
Choosing between a minor or certificate depends on your interest, career goals and how much time you can commit. At U of T Engineering, minors require more courses and provide a deeper exploration of a secondary field, while certificates are more focused and require fewer courses. Both minors and certificates will appear on student transcripts upon graduation.

General Requirements
Students interested in pursuing an engineering minor must take a minimum of six half-courses as outlined on individual minor pages.
Of these six half-courses, one half-course may also be a core course in a student's program or option, if applicable.
With approval, a thesis or capstone design course may count in place of up to two advanced level half-courses if the project is strongly related to the subject matter of the minor.
Those pursuing an engineering certificate must take three half-courses as outlined on individual certificate pages.
Across all minors & certificates:
-
Students should consult their home department if taking technical electives outside of those listed for their degree requirements.
-
Students must meet the course enrolment requirements set by the department offering the course or seek permission if they do not meet the listed prerequisites.
-
Course availability is not guaranteed. It is the student's responsibility to ensure compatibility with their timetable.
How to Enrol
Minors
To enrol in an engineering minor, students must submit the MS Form found on each minor’s page. Students may enrol in a minor at any time during their studies. To request that your thesis or design project count towards an engineering minor, complete the 2024-2025 Minor Thesis Approval Form (PDF).
Certificates
Students now have the option to add their certificate enrolment directly on ACORN. Students can add their certificates (but not minors) through the "Programs" tab under "Enrol & Manage." You can find the program code for each Certificate in the “Certificates section of the Academic Calendar.”
