First Year News Feed: Welcome to Your First Year, June 18, 2021

Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering

Hello!

Congratulations and welcome to U of T Engineering!

The First Year News Feed is a weekly email sent by the First Year Office team to keep you informed of important deadlines, services, events and opportunities that are relevant to you.

Although classes won’t start for another few months, we’ll be in touch throughout the summer to let you know what to expect and keep you on track for your first year, so please be sure to read these emails each week.

If you haven’t already, please carefully read the Guide to First Year, which will answer many questions you’re likely to have.

Please keep reading below for more info about optional summer programs and courses that you can participate in, and where to find the most up-to-date information to help you plan your arrival on campus in September.

We look forward to working with you in the coming year, and in the meantime, please follow
us on Twitter
and feel free to reach out to us if questions arise that are not covered in your Guide to First Year

Take care and be well,

The First Year Team
(JesusMiracle, Leslie, Jennifer, Todd & Brianna)

Summer Prep Opportunities
There are several optional ways to prep for September that you can consider this summer. Many of you may already be participating in the U of T Engineering Academy (UTEA) in order to refresh your high school math and science knowledge (and it’s not too late to register for the July cohort!).

The First Year Office also offers our
First Year Foundations (FYF) programs, which include sessions and mini-courses to help you to feel more prepared for September.

As part of FYF, we have Academic Orientation sessions coming up on Monday, July 5 from 8:30-10 a.m. EDT and Wednesday, July 7 from 3:30-5 p.m. EDT. It’s a great opportunity to meet the First Year Office staff and some new classmates, while getting your questions answered about how to
prepare for first year.

Early Start Courses
For those of you who are interested in getting an early start on your fall term courses, you can consider taking either APS162: Calculus for Engineers I or APS164: Introductory Chemistry from a Materials Perspective during July & August.

Residence Update, Pre-Arrival Documents & Study Permits
Residence Update
For the 2021-2022 academic year, students moving into residence will be required to get their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before their residence move-in date.

The Vice-Provost, Students FAQ has more information on this measure.

Pre-Arrival Documents

If you will be arriving in Canada from another country and require proof of enrolment in advance of your travels, the Office of the Registrar offers students

Verification of Current Enrolment letters and Letters of Registration

Study Permits
If you are an international student and will be studying at U of T Engineering on a study permit from the Canadian government, it is extremely important that you apply for your study permit as soon as possible if you have not done so already. Even if you attended secondary school in Canada, you must obtain a new study permit; you cannot use your existing secondary school study permit for post-secondary studies.

Please review the University’s FAQs for newly-admitted international students for updated guidance on study permits, visas, and international travel.

Where to find updated information
The First Year Office team periodically updates our Frequently Asked Questions page, and you’re always welcome to email us or use our live chat during office hours for questions that you can’t find answers to.

In addition, given the ongoing pandemic, there are still details and changes regarding facilities, courses, and policies which are being communicated as they are determined. Be sure to monitor your email regularly for official updates, and you should also check
the following authoritative pages regularly for current information:
