Hello,
We’re emailing you on a Wednesday this week because the University (including the First Year Office) is closed this Thursday, July 1 and Friday, July 2 – we will resume our regular Friday schedule next week!
In this issue of the News Feed we will introduce you a system called ACORN, highlight an upcoming deadline for academic accommodations, and let you know about a non-credit language assessment quiz that will be coming your way soon.
A reminder for those of you considering taking one of your for-credit courses this summer: don’t
delay – Early Start courses begin on July 5!
If you haven’t already, please be sure to read your Guide to First Year, follow us on Twitter and if you have questions and want to connect with us, you can reach us through our Live Chat service.
Have a great long weekend!
—The First Year Team
(JesusMiracle, Leslie, Jennifer, Todd & Brianna)

We would like to introduce you to an online service called ACORN which you’ll use quite a bit over the next four years.
Right now, you should use it to verify your personal information that the University has on file. Be sure to check that your contact info and address are correct and up to date, and add your emergency contact person’s details.
In a few weeks, this is where you will view your class schedule and your tuition invoice. And at the end of each semester, ACORN is where you’ll see your final course grades. Take a few minutes to get familiar with it!

If you had academic accommodations in high school (e.g. extra test time, adaptive technology, deadline extensions, reduced course load, etc.), we highly recommend that you register with Accessibility Services at U of T so that you can have supports in place for your first year. The deadline to submit a new registration is July 14 in order to have accommodations available to you for the first day of classes.
You might also be interested in the Moving Forward Summer Transition Program, designed to help incoming students living with disabilities to get to know U of T, discover in-depth learning strategies, and learn how to use your academic accommodations.
Did you know?… Thousands of U of T students receive accommodations through Accessibility Services to help remove disability-related barriers each year, the majority of whom are registered for mental health. In other words, if you have an accessibility
need, you are not alone! Accessibility Services upholds strict student privacy and confidentiality, and they are a great resource for collaboration and advice. You can contact their office for further information.

The DELNA (Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment) is a short, non-credit assessment that measures your ability to recognize and use academic language. You will receive an email invitation in early July to join a Quercus course
to complete this non-credit assessment before the start of the Fall Term. Academic language skills are what allow you to participate in all of the learning activities (lectures, labs, tutorials, study groups) where you will study engineering. Your DELNA results will help you to be more aware of your facility with using English in an academic context, and provide you with support if there are areas for improvement.
No preparation is needed for this assessment, and there are no grades associated with the DELNA (in contrast, the Math Self-Assessment Quizzes that were sent to you recently do count towards 5% of your first-year Calculus I grade. More info about these can be found on our Math Preparation page). Rather, the DELNA is being run so we can better understand and support our first-year class.
It will take no more (and probably less) than 30 minutes to complete and it is NOT something that you will pass or fail or have any impact on your enrolment in the university. Please watch your email* for updates about this next week.
*The University will contact you through the email address that you have listed in your ACORN account. |

Upcoming International Workshops |
|
Are you an international student? The First Year International Student Workshop Series is a chance for you to get your questions about life at U of T Engineering answered before the start of the Fall Term.
The next workshop is on Tuesday, July 6 from 8:30-10 a.m. EDT. At this session called “Guide to Self-Care” you’ll have a chance to meet the Faculty’s Mental Health Programs Officer and the Engineering Learning Skills Strategist to learn more about what self-care can look like as an international engineering student.
Register for the July 6 workshop here. |
