First-Year Students: Transferring out of Engineering Science
A newly admitted first-year Engineering Science student will be accepted to transfer into any Engineering program on or before the last day to add or substitute Fall Session courses.
A first-year Engineering Science student who obtains a Fall Session average of 60% or greater will be accepted to transfer to any Engineering program on or before the last day to add a Winter Session course. A student with a Fall Session average between 55% and 60% will be conditionally accepted into his or her program of choice. A student with a Fall Session average between 45% and 55% will be accepted to transfer into any program if space is available; they are required to enroll in the T-Program. For more information, please review the Faculty’s Promotion Regulations in the Academic Calendar.
A first-year Engineering Science student who obtains a Winter Session average of 55% or greater will be accepted to transfer to any Engineering program provided that his or her Request to Transfer online application is submitted prior to May 15. A student who obtains a Winter Session average between 50% and 55% must submit his or her transfer application no later than May 15 and these applications will be considered on their merits along with the applications for transfer from students in Engineering programs.
First-Year Students: Transferring Between Programs
If you have completed first year and are applying to another program for second year, in most cases you will not have to take any additional courses*. If your request is granted, you will simply begin your second year of studies in your new program.
The approval of your request is subject to the availability of places reserved for internal transfers. For the past few years, several programs have been unable to accept all students who seeking transfers.
If you completed your first year with a clear record, earned a Winter Session average of 65% or greater and submitted your online Request to Transfer before May 15, you will receive preferential placement.
If you obtained honours in both sessions of your first year, you will automatically be allowed to the Engineering program of your choice.
If you are transferring between Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, please note the following:
-
Applications to transfer between Mechanical and Industrial Engineering programs must be submitted via the Engineering Portal by May 15
-
Students who wish to transfer between the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering programs will be allowed to do so if admitted directly to first-year Fall Session of the Mechanical or Industrial Engineering programs
-
Students not in the category above will be allowed to transfer if places are available
Transfer from other Engineering programs into Engineering Science are permitted after a full year of study only, in cases where the student has a superior academic record.
*Students who wish to apply for a transfer into Electrical or Computer Engineering (ECE) must complete APS105H1: Computer Fundamentals (C Programming), as this course is required for the second-year ECE curriculum. Students in Core 8 programs that would normally take APS106H1: Fundamentals of Computer Programming (Python) may request to substitute APS105 in the winter term of first year by completing a Course Switch form through the Engineering Portal by November 25. In the event that students do not transfer to ECE, APS105 is an approved substitution for APS106 in all other Core 8 programs.
Upper-Year Students: Transferring Between Programs
In almost all cases, if you are an upper-year student and your request to transfer to another program is granted, you will need to begin your studies from the second year of your new program (i.e. you have to start again at 2F). The exception is if you are transferring within ECE.
If you are transferring between Electrical and Computer Engineering, you will simply continue in the next year of your requested program. Transferring between the two programs is seamless — you will not need to take any additional courses or repeat any sessions. You will simply select your courses in your third and fourth year to fulfill program requirements in either Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
Transfer from other Engineering programs into Engineering Science are permitted after a full year of study only, in cases where the student has a superior academic record.
Transfer requests can be submitted on the Engineering Portal.
