Engineering is inherently a public endeavor, with many foundational projects — such as bridges, waterworks, and net-zero emissions initiatives — being undertaken in partnership with government entities. Even private projects are shaped by public regulations.
The certificate program offered by the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto equips engineering students with a comprehensive understanding of public policy, enhancing their readiness for professional practice.
Training in public policy empowers engineers to build effective collaborations with public actors, including governments and regulatory agencies, and to actively participate in policymaking. Technological expertise is crucial for public decision-making, and familiarity with public institutions and processes enables engineers to contribute meaningfully to the challenges of an urbanizing, changing world.
