Business skills are a key part of an engineer’s toolkit, enabling them to excel in various roles across industries. These skills range from enhanced project management to communication and leadership abilities. Additionally, having strong financial acumen and an understanding of ethical and sustainable practices is vital for advancing innovation and enterprise. The undergraduate Engineering Business Certificate is a collaborative effort across the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management.
Through this certificate, students will delve into the business dimension of engineering. Courses focus on economics and accounting fundamentals, with a choice between marketing and strategy or management and organizational behaviour.
Students interested in a more specialized education have the option of pursing an Engineering Business Minor.
Note: students may only receive credit on their transcript for one of the following: Engineering Business Certificate, Entrepreneurship Certificate, or Engineering Business Minor.
Eligibility
This certificate is open to any student completing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.
Enrolment
Students can self-enrol in this program on ACORN (Enrol and Manage tab) using the program code at the top of this page. Students who complete the requirements of the certificate will receive a notation on their transcript upon graduation.
Requirements
The requirements for an Engineering Business Certificate in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering are the successful completion of the following courses:
One of the following:
- Departmental Engineering economics course (CHE 249H1, CHE 374H1, CME 368H1, ECE 472H1, MIE 258H1, MIE 358H1)
Two of the following:
- JRE 410H1: Markets & Competitive Strategy (CS elective)
- JRE 420H1: People Management & Organizational Behaviour (HSS elective)
- CHE 488H1: Entrepreneurship & Business for Engineers (CS elective)
