Undergraduate Summer Research Awards

Administered by the First Year Office, these fellowships support first-year students within the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering to gain summer (May to August) experience in a research setting. 

Eligibility: First-year students in any of the Core 8 Programs, Track One or Engineering Science.

This fellowship recognizes academic merit and is intended to support research projects where students are co-supervised (i.e., collaborative projects between two University of Toronto faculty members where at least one faculty member must be from the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering). 

Eligibility: Undergraduate engineering students. This includes Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada or international students with a valid student visa.

UTEAs are awarded to undergraduate students to work on research projects under the supervision of faculty members who hold an active NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR research grant, either as a principal investigator or co-investigator. Please note that students must apply for the UTEA at the department of their research supervisor, if different from their own department.

Eligibility: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or international students with a valid student visa

NSERC USRAs provide financial support in obtaining research work experience to help develop and inspire students' potential for graduate studies and a research career in natural sciences and engineering. Please note that students should apply for the UTEA at the department of their research supervisor if different from their own department.

Eligibility: Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada who have completed at least two academic terms at the time of application (first-year students are not eligible).

NSERC of Canada is providing increased opportunities for Black and Indigenous undergraduate students to obtain research work experience to help develop and inspire students' potential for graduate studies and a research career in natural sciences and engineering. 

Eligibility:  

• Students who self-identify as Black or Indigenous
• Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada, or Native American students from the continental United States (in recognition of the Jay Treaty of 1794)
• Students who have completed at least two academic terms at the time of application (first-year students are not eligible)

This award provides Black undergraduate students with research experience that complements the degree program they are pursuing, which may lead them to consider graduate studies careers in the fields of health and life sciences (CIHR) or the social sciences and humanities (SSHRC).

• Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada
• Students who have completed at least two academic terms at the time of application (first-year students are not eligible)
