This month, there were so many U of T Engineering student-athlete updates, that we decided to do a roundup. Congrats to our Varsity athletes on an incredible month!
- Jack Berkshire (Year 3 IndE) won the men’s 600m at the OUA championships.
- Sophmore Sarah Wentling (Year 2 IndE) scored two goals as the Women’s Water Polo team took on the Chapman University Panthers in California.
- Tyler Wall (Kinesiology), Graeme Aylward (Year 2 IndE), Osvald Nitski (Year 4 MechE) and Cam Kidd (Sociology) capped off the three-day meet for the U SPORTS championships with a second-place finish in the men’s 400 medley relay. Veteran Nitski also earned two bronze medals at the meet.
- Meet the Licht family: all three siblings, including MIE student Martin Licht (Year 1 EngSci), currently play volleyball for the Varsity Blues.
- Swimming crowned OUA champions. CivMin’s Chris Ruus (Year 3 CivE) and MIE’s Graeme Alyward (Year 2 IndE) and Osvald Nitski (Year 4 MechE) achieve podium finishes after day one of the OUA championships. On day two, Alyward was a member of the 200 medley relay team and earned a bronze medal in the 50 breaststroke, while Nitski won the men’s 200 IM and took home the male student-athlete community service award.
- Swimmer Graeme Alyward (Year 2 IndE) named Varsity Blues Athlete of the Week.
- Blues Women’s Fencing 3-peat as OUA champions. Margaret Ho (IBBME PhD candidate) was part of the team that won the silver medal in the foil team relay final.
- The Varsity Blues men’s and women’s track and field teams, which include 12 U of T Engineering student-athletes, continue to shine at the Windsor Team Challenge and Brockport Golden Eagle Multi & Invitational. At the Windsor Team Challenge, Carson Bradley (Mathematics), AJ Bimm (Social Science), Emmett Bravakis (Year 1 CompE) and Jack Berkshire (Year 3 IndE) won the men’s 4×400 relay. Berkshire was second to cross the line in the men’s 300m. Christina Esposito (Year 1 ChemE) and Somerset Jarvis Year 4 CivE) were sixth and eighth respectively in the women’s 1000m. At the Brockport Golden Eagle Multi, Phillipe Johns (Year 3 ElecE) placed fourth in the men’s heptathlon, second in the 60m dash, 60m hurdles and shot put, fourth in the 1000m, eighth in pole vault, ninth in long jump and twelfth in the high jump.
- Blues Men’s Squash team boasts OUA bronze and U of T’s No. 1 women’s squash player Rhea Dhar (Year 3 MechE) named OUA all-star as Varsity Blues Women’s Squash comes in fourth at OUA championships.
- Rookie Martin Licht (Year 1 EngSci) earned nine points off of six kills and a game-high three aces against the Trent Excalibur as Blues Men’s Volleyball secured first place in the East. During a February 7 game against the York Lions, Chris Towe (Year 4 MechE) led all players with 19 points. A force to be reckoned with this season, Towe notched a season-high 23 kills during February 2, 2020, game against the Windsor Lancers, while Daniel Tudor (Year 2 CompE) registered an impressive 16 digs.
- Blues Women’s Hockey clinches the top spot in the OUA standings after shutting out the Laurentian Voyageurs. Mathilde De Serres (Year 4 MechE) made a fantastic no-look pass to her sister Gabrielle De Serres (Commerce) who put the puck in the net.
- Fencer Ben Mucsi (Year 4 EngSci) named OUA peak performer.
- Ben Musci (Year 4 EngSci) and Lucia Stafford (Year 3 CivE) named Varsity Blues Athletes of the Week.
- In her first OUA championships, wrestler Kirti Saxena (Year 2 MechE) placed fifth in the women’s 59 kg event.
- Blues win fifth consecutive OUA title. Ben Musci (Year 4 EngSci) and Johnathan Zimmerman (Year 2 EngSci) named Epee OUA all-stars. Cameron Haigh (Year 3 EngSci) was part of the sabre relay team who claimed bronze. Ben Mucsi, Johnathan Zimmerman, Beston Leung (Year 4 CompE) and Colin McCurdy (Physical & Mathematical Sciences) captured gold in the epee team relay.
- Lucia Stafford (Year 4 CivE) breaks U23 Canadian record at Boston University’s Bruce Lehande Scarlet and White Invitational.
