Deferred Exams & Assessed Marks

When a student misses a final exam for valid reasons, the Undergraduate Assessment Committee (UAC) may grant a deferred exam or assessed mark. The Faculty has approved a new Policy for Missed Final Exams.

Deferred Exams are now the standard remedy for missed final exams.
Assessed Marks are only granted when specific conditions are met and when instructors indicate in CIS that assessed marks may be used as a remedy for missed exams.

Rules for Granting Assessed Marks

If you choose to allow for assessed marks to be considered as a potential remedy when a student misses a final exam due to valid reasons, please be aware that all the following conditions must be met:

Course Requirements:
- Closely supervised term work is worth at least 30% of the final grade.
- The instructor indicated in CIS Syllabus Builder that assessed marks may be used as a potential remedy for missed final exams.
Student Requirements:
- Student has achieved a grade of at least 60% in closely supervised term work.
- Student has completed at least 85% of closely supervised term work.
- Student has not reached their maximum eligibility for assessed marks: no more than two courses per term and no more than two assessed terms in total.
- The calculated assessed mark will not result in a course failure, Repeat Probation (PRO2) or Refused Further Registration (RFRG).

Under Step 5 of Syllabus Builder, you will have the opportunity to add your Composition of Final Marks (COFM). This is where you may select to allow for assessed marks to be used by the Undergraduate Assessment Committee (UAC) as a final exam remedy.

To allow for assessed marks to be used, you must set the closely supervised work to be at least 30%.

Option 1: If you select 30% or above

If you select a closely supervised term work of at least 30%, you will be given the option to confirm that you allow for assessed marks to be used by the UAC.

Option 2: If you select less than 30%

If you select less than 30% for your closely supervised term work, you will see a warning that the course will not be eligible for assessed marks. You may choose to proceed if you do not wish to allow for assessed marks.
