At 5 p.m. on December 6, 1989, a gunman entered an engineering classroom at Ecole Polytechnique and murdered 14 women and injured several more. The victims were targeted because of their gender, and the date has become a day of remembrance and action against gender-based violence and discrimination.
We are one of 14 engineering schools across Canada uniting to commemorate this anniversary. Each school will shine a beam of light into the sky at 5 p.m., from UBC in the west to Dalhousie in the east. Each ceremony across the country will be broadcast live on CBC.
Remarks will begin at 5 p.m., followed by an outdoor lighting ceremony.
*In the event of inclement weather, guests will gather on Level 8 of the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship (55 St. George Street)
